The US military is changing the way it fights with drones. After reportedly suffering a setback in the skies around the Strait of Hormuz, Washington is pushing ahead with a new multinational, multi-domain attack-drone force. On August 13, US Central Command announced Task Force Falcon Strike, bringing together one-way attack drones operated by US forces and potentially regional partners. The force is designed to operate across the air, sea and underwater domains.
Regional allies are being consulted, although countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan, Bahrain and Qatar have not publicly confirmed participation. But the timing of formation of this new task force is also very interesting. Well, it comes at a time when reports say the US has lost at least 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones during the Iran war which is roughly a quarter of the Reaper fleet it had before the conflict.
The reported losses are valued at more than $1.3 billion. So is America building a new 'drone army' after learning a painful lesson from Iran's Shahed warfare?
