In a bid to attract tourists from across the country during the 2027 Godavari Pushkarams, the Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation (RMC) and the Department of Museum and Archaeology have charted out a plan to renovate the heritage sites and museums along the banks of river Godavari, where at least eight crore visitors are expected to take part in the once in a 12 years event. East Godavari District Collector Kirthi Chekuri and RMC Commissioner Rahul Meena on Friday inspected the structural stability, facilities and basic amenities at heritage sites, including the residences of social reformer Kandukuri Veeresalingam and British irrigation engineer Sir Arthur Cotton at Dowleswaram.
They also inspected the Damerla Rama Rao Art Gallery and Sir Arthur Cotton Museum at the Godavari Delta Irrigation System complex. At the Sir Arthur Cotton Museum in Dowleswaram, Ms. Kirthi observed the dilapidated state of some portions of the building and poor maintenance. The Water Resources Department has been directed to renovate the museum, as foreign visitors are expected to throng the museum during the Pushkarams. Beautification plan “The prime tourist attractions and heritage sites, including the residences of Kandukuri Veeresalingam and Sir Arthur Cotton, will be renovated, and basic facilities and amenities will be provided for visitors.
A comprehensive renovation and beautification plan will be finalised and executed before the commencement of the Pushkarams 2027,” Ms. Kirthi said. The officials inspected the ongoing construction of a new building for the 64-year-old Rallabandi Subba Rao Museum in Rajamahendravaram city. In September 2023, construction of the museum was commenced with ₹4 crore released by the Ministry of Culture. The museum is home to nearly 1,600 artefacts and seven gold coins dating back to the Eastern Chalukya period.
Meena, Department of Museums and Archaeology Assistant Director K. Timmaraju, and Water Resources Department Executive Engineers Mr. Anandababu and Mr. Ramesh have been tasked with preparing the comprehensive renovation/beautification plan.
