AIADMK Minister P. Thangamani said on Friday (August 14, 2026) that the people were regretting having voted for the TVK, which would not stay in power for long. He was leading a protest, staged by AIADMK members at Fort Maidan, demanding that the State government waive the crop loans in full and get Tamil Nadu’s share of Cauvery water from Karnataka. Thangamani said that in 1991 and 2018, the Supreme Court had made it clear that without the permission of lower riparian States (Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala), Karnataka could not construct a new dam across the Cauvery.
But the Union government informed Parliament that permission from the lower riparian States was not needed for Karnataka to build a dam at Mekedatu. Subsequently, the Centre made a subtle change in its stand. Following this, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami wrote to the Union government. He said the TVK government did not care about this issue. Many times, the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee and the Cauvery Water Management Authority had ordered water release to Tamil Nadu.
But Karnataka had not complied with these directives. It had released only surplus water after its dams filled. Thangamani said ₹22,000 crore in crop loans was waived when the AIADMK was in power. The TVK government had renamed the projects announced by former Chief Ministers Mr. Palaniswami and Jayalalithaa. The people were now regretting having voted for the TVK. Its government would not last long, and Mr. Palaniswami would soon become the Chief Minister, he added.
P. Balakrishna Reddy, another former Minister, led the agitation at Namakkal.
