The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday turned down appeals filed by the two convicts — Abid Ali and Shafqat Ali — challenging a 2021 anti-terrorism court verdict that found them guilty of kidnapping, gang-rape, robbery and offences related to terrorism.

“The Lahore High Court (LHC) today dismissed appeals of the two men convicted in infamous rape case of the French woman of Pakistani-origin in 2020 in Lahore and upheld the trial court’s verdict of awarding them death sentences," a court official said, as quoted by news agency PTI. What Is The Case? On September 9, 2020, a French woman of Pakistani origin was travelling with her three children on the Sialkot-Lahore Motorway near Lahore, just when her vehicle ran short of fuel during the late-night journey. Subsequently, the family was left stranded on the roadside while waiting for assistance. According to investigators, the woman stayed inside the car with the doors and windows locked for safety.

The attackers — who arrived at the scene — smashed the windows, dragged her out of car, and raped her at gunpoint in front of her children. Before fleeing the site, the men also robbed the family of cash and jewellery. After the incident came to light, the Gujjarpura police registered an FIR on September 9, 2020 under multiple sections of the Pakistan Penal Code and the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997. The crime had triggered a widespread outrage, with scenes of protests and anger emerging from the region. Outrage escalated when then Lahore police chief Umer Sheikh questioned why the woman had been travelling late at night, suggesting she should have chosen a different route.
