News18 A Nepali Sherpa guide who disappeared on Mount Everest and was feared dead has been found alive after spending nearly a week alone on the mountain. The rescue has stunned climbers and officials alike, with many describing his survival in Everest’s harsh conditions as nothing short of extraordinary. Search Teams Had Almost Given Up Hope An incredible survival story has emerged from Mount Everest after a 52-year-old Sherpa guide was found alive six days after he went missing on the world’s highest mountain. Dawa Sherpa disappeared while descending from Everest with a Polish climber after the pair failed to reach the summit. He was last seen on May 29 between Camp III and Camp IV as per Aljazeera. While the climber safely returned to base camp, Dawa never arrived. It is still unclear how the two became separated during the descent. As days passed without any sign of him, hopes of finding him alive began to fade.
Most climbers had already left the mountain as the climbing season was ending, and the seasonal route was being dismantled. Search efforts initially failed to locate the experienced guide. The team had been working on the mountain removing ropes, ladders and leftover equipment after the climbing season. As they got closer, they realised the person struggling through the snow was Dawa Sherpa. The discovery stunned rescuers, especially because he was found far from the area where he had last been seen. The distance suggested that he had managed to travel a considerable stretch of Everest on his own despite the extreme conditions. Dawa was reportedly exhausted, suffering from frostbite and barely able to move when he was rescued. Family Had Already Begun Mourning After being brought down from the mountain, Dawa was reportedly flown by helicopter to Kathmandu for urgent medical treatment.
Doctors are currently treating him for frostbite and other health issues caused by prolonged exposure to high altitude, freezing temperatures and low oxygen levels. His daughter, Mendo Lhamu Sherpa, said the family was overwhelmed after learning he had survived. “He recognised me is good and speaks. We are happy," Reuters quoted her as saying. The family initially struggled to believe the reports and reportedly asked for photographs before accepting that the rescued man was indeed Dawa. Surviving Everest Against The Odds Mountaineering officials reportedly said Dawa managed to stay alive in one of the toughest environments on Earth for several days without support.
