District Collector Sumit Kumar on Thursday called for increased public awareness on organ and body donation, highlighting the urgent need to bridge the gap between the demand and availability for organs. Addressing an organ and body donation awareness programme organised by Apollo Institute of Medical Sciences and Research and the Apollo University here, Mr. Sumit Kumar said that nearly 4,800 people in Andhra Pradesh were awaiting kidney transplants, while only about 350 transplants were being performed annually.

He urged the public to develop a spirit of volunteerism and consider organ donation as a meaningful contribution to society during unforeseen circumstances. He also stressed the need to streamline clinical procedures and establish more transplant centres to meet the growing demand.

The Collector said that sustained awareness campaigns were the need of the hour to dispel misconceptions and encourage more people to voluntarily pledge their organs

and bodies for donation. He later flagged off an awareness rally, which passed through the arterial junctons of the Chittoor Municipal Corporation.
