Belagavi: ICMR-NITM concludes SHINE outreach programme

The ICMR Institute of Traditional Medicine (ICMR-NITM), Belagavi, concluded the ICMR–SHINE (Science and Health Innovation for the Nextgen Explorers) Open School Day Outreach Programme 2026. It was held on Tuesday and Wednesday. Over 1,000 students from 13 schools and Pre-University (PU) colleges participated in the two-day programme. It provided a platform for young learners to explore biomedical research, health sciences and innovation.
The same programme was conducted at MRHRU Sirwar, Raichur district, where around 200 students from nearby villages attended. The SHINE programme is a pan-India initiative of the ICMR aimed at inspiring students of classes 9-12 to develop an interest in science and consider careers in biomedical and health research. The programme provides students with opportunities to experience scientific research through guided laboratory visits, hands-on learning, scientific demonstrations and interactions with researchers.
The most notable feature of SHINE 2026 was the enthusiastic and active participation of the students. Rather than being passive visitors, the students actively engaged with scientists, asked questions, observed experimental procedures and demonstrated keen interest in understanding how scientific research contributes to addressing real-world health challenges. As part of the national SHINE initiative, students were also encouraged to participate in a national-level student competition, through which they can develop and submit individual concept notes proposing solutions to identified public health problems.
The competition was launched on 11 August 2026 and will remain open until 11 September 2026, said a release.
