On his first day as Leader of the House and as the Monsoon Session of the Karnataka legislature began on Thursday, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar bowed at the entrance to the Legislative Assembly before entering the House. Later, before taking his seat, he bowed from the Chief Minister’s chair.

The first day’s proceedings, however, were confined to condoling the deaths of 15 prominent personalities, including former legislators, and recalling their contributions to society in various fields. Shivakumar, Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara, Leader of the Opposition R. Ashok and more than a dozen legislators paid tribute to former Minister D.

Sudhakar, C. Veeranna, Venkataramanappa, Ramachandra Gowda, K.S. Srinivasaiah, S.H. Puttaranganath, Sayyed Yasin, V. Srinivasan, H.M. Chandrashekarappa, R.G. Venkatachalaiah, S. Krishnappa, former Rajya Sabha member H. Hanumanthappa, singers S. Janaki and Asha Bhosle, and Chennamma, wife of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda.

Shivakumar announced that an irrigation scheme in the Hiriyur Assembly constituency would be named after Sudhakar in recognition of his contribution.
