Shetty Institute of Technology (SIT), Kalaburagi, organised a Greenathon as part of its ongoing first-year induction programme 2026-27 on Thursday (August 13), bringing its new batch of students together for an initiative focused on environmental awareness, community participation, and responsible citizenship. Organised by the Service Scheme (NSS) committee of SIT, the Greenathon commenced at Jagat Circle and proceeded towards the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Kalaburagi.

The initiative took the message of environmental consciousness beyond the campus and encouraged students to engage with issues concerning the wider community. The activity was designed to give first-year students an early opportunity to participate in a collective initiative linking environmental responsibility with civic engagement. Through its NSS activities, the institute aims to encourage students to understand their role in addressing issues affecting the communities around them.

Speaking about the initiative, Anirudh Shetty, director, Shetty Group of Institutions, said education should extend beyond classroom learning and help students understand the communities they are part of. “We want our students to become aware of the communities they are part of and understand that even small actions can contribute to meaningful change,” he said, adding that introducing students to initiatives such as the Greenathon during their induction was part of developing this mindset from the beginning of their engineering education.

The Greenathon is part of SIT’s week-long first-year induction programme, which began on Monday and will conclude on August 17. The programme combines academic orientation with sessions and activities covering wellbeing, technology, robotics, entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence, social responsibility, talent development and career preparedness.
