Air India has mandated comprehensive screening for all Air India and Air India Express pilots for substances and unpermitted medications starting August 13. The decision follows an incident on a Phuket-Delhi flight where a pilot tested positive for marijuana. Following the incident, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation pulled up the airline regarding its work culture and testing protocols.
Previously, the airline followed international standards by conducting random dope tests on ten percent of pilots, alongside breathalyzer tests for alcohol. Under the new directive, mandatory screening will be conducted concurrent with training at the Gurugram Academy, post-flight briefing centers, and designated airline base locations. Additionally, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has instructed the civil aviation regulator to review existing frameworks and potentially increase random testing samples across the industry to enforce stricter compliance and curb substance abuse among flight crew members.
