Seventy-eight inmates in Telangana prisons have cleared the SSC examination through the Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), with the prisons department announcing special remission for all successful candidates. The inmates were part of 108 prisoners enrolled for the Class X programme under an MoU between the Telangana Prisons Department and NIOS.
They underwent a year of regular classes, mock tests and pre-board examinations, supported by government and private teachers. Of the successful candidates, 56 were from Central Prison, Cherlapalli, 15 from Central Prison, Nizamabad, and seven from the Special Prison for Women, Hyderabad. Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Soumya Mishra distributed certificates to the successful candidates and announced Director General’s Remission as a special incentive for their educational achievement.
“The department will now encourage the successful candidates to pursue Senior Secondary education through NIOS. After completing 10+2, they can pursue BA programmes through the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Open University Study Centre at Cherlapalli prison. They are also eligible to enrol in ITI courses at the industrial training institute established at Cherlapalli,” explained the DG.
Another 47 inmates have newly enrolled for SSC education, the department said, highlighting growing interest in continuing education among prisoners.
