The proposed Foreign Contribution Regulation Amendment Bill 2026 faces criticism overseas after a US lawmaker claimed it targets religious groups, restricts civil society, and could strain diplomatic ties. Responding to these allegations, India's ambassador to the United States refuted the claims, stating that the legislation applies uniformly across all faith groups and ideologies without discriminating against any community.
The envoy noted that countries such as the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada maintain similar frameworks for regulating foreign contributions. Official data shows foreign contributions to registered organizations in India rose to 2.67 billion dollars in 2024-2025. A Joint Parliamentary Committee will examine the bill and submit its report to the Lok Sabha.
