Cristiano Ronaldo reacts to Lionel Messi's post for his father. Cristiano Ronaldo has sent his commiserations for Lionel Messi and his family, who are mourning the death of the latter’s father, Jorge. Commenting on Messi’s emotional letter for Jorge on Instagram, Ronaldo offered a ‘huge hug’ for the family, with a ‘Stay strong’ to bookend the brief message.
“A huge hug to you and your loved ones during these difficult times, Leo. Stay strong," Ronaldo wrote. Ronaldo and Messi, lifelong rivals with mutual respect for each other, recently played the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Messi returned to Argentina on Sunday to bid farewell to Jorge, who died aged 68 after a battle with cancer. A private funeral ceremony was held at a cemetery in Perez, near Rosario, attended by close family members and a few of Messi’s Argentina teammates. Jorge had been a central figure throughout his son’s extraordinary career. A former metalworker in Rosario, he introduced Lionel to football at the age of four and coached him at local club Grandoli, before eventually taking over as his full-time agent.
In the lengthy note, the Argentina captain admitted he was struggling to accept the loss and recalled how Jorge had supported him throughout his football journey. “Dad, I still can’t believe you’re gone. It hasn’t sunk in, or rather, I don’t want it to. It’s so hard to imagine that I won’t see you anymore, that we won’t talk anymore. I know you were suffering and that it’s for the best, but you left too soon. We still had so much to enjoy together," Messi wrote. The 39-year-old then spoke candidly about his future, admitting his father’s absence had left him questioning whether he could continue playing football. “I don’t know what I’m going to do without you, I don’t know how to go on.
I just played football, and now I seriously doubt I’ll be able to keep doing it for much longer," Messi said.
