(Representative image) A nine-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped in front of her minor brother by a man known to her family in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district, while the siblings were returning home from school. The incident took place on Tuesday in the Mehgaon police station area. The accused, aged 21, was arrested within 24 hours, police said. Girl Taken On Motorcycle The survivor, a Class 4 student, was returning home with her elder brother, a Class 6 student, when the accused stopped them and offered them a ride on his motorcycle.
Instead of taking the siblings to their home, he allegedly drove them to a deserted location, where he sexually assaulted the girl in front of her brother. When the 11-year-old boy protested and tried to intervene, the accused allegedly assaulted him as well. He then left the siblings at the spot and fled. By then, the girl had become unconscious. Her brother ran home and alerted their family. Relatives reached the location, found the girl lying there and immediately took her to hospital. Health officials medically confirmed the assault, following which the family reported the incident to Mehgaon police. Accused Arrested Within 24 Hours Bhind Superintendent of Police Suraj Verma said multiple teams were formed to trace the accused. The accused is a resident of the same village and was well known to the girl’s family, police said. He was arrested in less than 24 hours. Police are also examining his criminal antecedents. Similar Case Reported Six Days Earlier The Bhind incident came six days after another case was reported in Narsinghpur’s Gotegaon area.
A Class 3 girl returning from school was allegedly taken on a motorcycle by her 28-year-old neighbour, Annu Yadav, on the pretext of dropping her home. According to the information, Yadav took the girl into a jungle, raped her and strangled her to death. Narsinghpur Superintendent of Police Rishikesh Meena formed multiple teams, following which the accused was arrested within 24 hours of the recovery of the girl’s body. Crimes Against Children On The Rise The two incidents come amid a broader rise in crimes against children across the country. According to NCRB data, 1.87 lakh cases of crimes against children were registered in 2024, nearly 6 per cent more than in 2023. Offences registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act accounted for 69,191 cases, around 37 per cent of the total, involving 70,132 child victims. More than 44,000 of these cases were registered under Sections 4 and 6 of the POCSO Act.
