The Annamayya district police have intensified measures to curb the transportation and use of ganja and other narcotic substances, with a special focus on educational institutions. In a district-level review meeting held at the Collectorate here on Wednesday, in-charge Collector Shiv Narayan Sharma directed the police officials to strengthen inter-departmental coordination and step up surveillance against drug menace under ‘Operation Vajra’ initiative.
Shiv Narayan Sharma called for strict enforcement of the ban on tobacco product sales within 100 metres of educational institutions, and highlighted regular reviews with institutional management. “Awareness programmes involving parents, teachers, self-help groups (SHGs) and educational institutions will be conducted to keep students away from drugs,” the Collector said.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Dheeraj Kunubilli said that police had seized 206 kg of ganja in seven cases since January 26 and identified 33 accused, of whom 26 were arrested. The SP said that 15 sellers and five consumers were identified during the period.
He urged the public to report any drug-related information immediately through the toll-free number 1972.
