The Kakatiya University Retired Teachers’ Association (KURTA) organised a function in the university to mark the golden jubilee of Kakatiya University (1976–2026), on Tuesday. A large number of retired professors, including those in their 80s and 90s, attended the programme and recalled their years of teaching and research at the university, particularly the challenges posed by limited resources and infrastructure during its formative years. Vice-Chancellor Prof. K. Pratap Reddy, who was the chief guest, said the contribution of retired teachers to the development and recognition of the university at the national and international levels can not be forgotten.
He said plans were being prepared, in coordination with senior teachers, officers and associations of retired employees, to celebrate the golden jubilee throughout the year. KURTA president Prof. A. Sadanandam, who presided over the programme, recalled the university’s journey and the role played by its teachers and students in the Telangana movement and other social movements. He said the university, which began in 1968 as a Post-Graduate Centre of Osmania University with four departments, became a full-fledged university on August 19, 1976.
Sadanandam said one of the university’s primary objectives was to make higher education accessible to the poor, weaker sections and rural students. He also recalled the contribution of its first Vice-Chancellor, late Prof. K. Venkataramaiah, to laying a strong foundation for the institution. Ghanpur MLA and former Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari stressed the need to strengthen public education in view of rapid changes in higher education. Referring to emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, he called for suitable changes in educational policies and curricula.
Senior retired teachers Prof. Seetharama Rao (Chemistry), Prof. Vidyavati (Botany) and Prof. M. Kistaiah (Public Administration) were felicitated. The golden jubilee souvenir was also released on the occasion.
