A three-week political deadlock in Parliament between the government and the opposition led to over 144 hours of lost scheduled business across both houses between July 20 and August 10. With Parliament costing ₹1.5 crore per hour to run, the disruptions resulted in an estimated loss of ₹216.15 crore to taxpayers.
The standoff stemmed from opposition demands regarding a police crackdown on student protests in Delhi and alleged Ram Temple donation irregularities. Although Union Home Minister Amit Shah offered a discussion, Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi dismissed the offer. Despite the paralysis, the government passed 19 bills, several without debate, including passing seven bills in just 36 minutes.
