Ranaut, who represents Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi constituency in the Lok Sabha, said her comments had been misinterpreted as a blanket criticism of young people. “If someone claims to be a cockroach, then naturally, they would live in a gutter," Ranaut said while explaining her earlier remarks.

She added that she did not consider herself a “cockroach" and would reject such a description if it were directed at her. “If someone were to say I live in a gutter, I would deny it. But if someone claims to be a cockroach, then naturally, they would live in a gutter. Where else?" she said. Her comments weeks came after she previously criticised young people participating in the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protests, referring to them as “Generation Gutter". Commenting on the continued disruption in Parliament this monsoon session, Ranaut predicted that this would be Rahul Gandhi’s final term Leader of the Opposition. “I feel he is making a mockery of the country. He constantly ridicules the nation; for him, everything is a joke. This is the first time I am seeing Parliament being made such a mockery of. In the same breath, he says, ‘We want an answer from Amit Shah ji—asking whether or not he did such-and-such to the students—while simultaneously declaring, “We are not here to listen to him." He has no sense of shame or propriety left. The whole world is watching and wondering what kind of person this is. The way he is venting his frustration and insulting Parliament and, by extension, the entire nation and its citizens convinces me, as someone observing his role as Leader of the Opposition, that this will be his final term," she said.
