The ban follows a government notification issued on August 10, 2026, with the state citing public health concerns behind the decision. The Food Safety and Drugs Administration has intensified inspections across Karnataka following the notification to ensure compliance with the ban. According to a notification, the Office of the Commissioner of Food Safety, Karnataka, has prohibited the manufacture, storage, distribution, transportation and sale of gutkha and pan masala containing tobacco and/or nicotine across the state. The prohibition will remain in force for one year, according to the notification. The order covers multiple stages of the supply chain, including manufacturing, storage, transportation, distribution and sale of the specified products.
