Peter Navarro has been a vocal critic of India’s purchase of Russian oil and has accused New Delhi of helping finance Moscow’s war in Ukraine through its energy trade with Russia. He has repeatedly criticised India over its Russian oil purchases, calling the country the “Maharaja of tariffs" and, on another occasion, describing India as a “laundromat for the Kremlin". Responding to the criticism, Peter Navarro urged his Indian critics to stop what he described as “nasty little attacks". “I would say is, don’t do that. That’s not how we resolve problems here in America," he said. Navarro did not specify what threats or attacks he had received online but characterised the backlash as being widespread.
What Has Peter Navarro Said About India’s Russian Oil Purchases? Peter Navarro has repeatedly argued that India’s purchases of Russian oil increased after Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022 and that the trade has helped Russia finance its war effort. “Prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, India was not involved in the oil trade with Russia, but afterwards it got heavily involved and was selling a lot of refined products on behalf of Russia, which helped feed the war machine," he said. He also claimed that his criticism had contributed to a reduction in India’s Russian oil purchases. “Maybe, I had a little bit to do with that with that op-ed," Peter Navarro said, referring to an opinion article he wrote for the Financial Times.
India has previously rejected Peter Navarro’s comments on its Russian oil purchases. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had earlier described Peter Navarro’s statements as “inaccurate and misleading", saying India rejected the claims.
