(IMAGE: REPRESENTATIVE/FILE/REUTERS) Sheikh Hasina Extradition: India has said that it is examining Bangladesh’s request for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in line with established processes. New Delhi’s response came a day after Dhaka reiterated its demand for Hasina’s extradition during a meeting between Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. While addressing a press briefing, Ministry of Exteranl Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jasiwal said that the issue is being examined in line with established processes on the Indian side.
“We have made it very clear that this issue is being examined in line with established processes on the Indian side. We will give you an update when there is one," he said as quoted by news agency PTI. Hasina has been living in India since fleeing Bangladesh after the collapse of her government in August 2024 during the massive anti-government agitation. Dhaka has been seeking her return in connection with cases linked to the crackdown on student-led protests in 2024. The previous interim government led by Muhammad Yunus had also requested India to extradite Hasina arguing that she was convicted of “crimes against humanity" for the brutal crackdown on the student-led protests. Earlier in November 2025, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal sentenced the deposed Prime Minister to death in a case over alleged crimes against humanity. The court found Hasina guilty on three counts, concluding a months-long trial that found her guilty of ordering a deadly crackdown on a student-led uprising last year that led to the fall of her Awami League government.
The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Mohd Golam Mortuza Majumder, also pronounced its judgement against Hasina’s two aides, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, over the same charges. The court said the three accused acted in connivance with each other to commit atrocities in order to kill protesters throughout the country. However, it pardoned the former police chief, who “sought an apology from the tribunal and the people of the country". Meanwhile, Jaiswal said India has extended two separate invitations to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman — one for a bilateral visit and another to attend the outreach session of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi in September. India is scheduled to host the BRICS Summit on September 12 and 13. Rahman has been invited to the outreach session in his capacity as the current chair of BIMSTEC.
