(Representational pic/ANI) Two Indian farmers from West Bengal’s Nadia district were allegedly abducted by a group of Bangladeshi farmers in an apparent attempt to secure the release of a Bangladeshi farmer detained by the Border Security Force (BSF). The farmers, identified as Sachin Karmakar and Narayan Deb, were allegedly taken from a border area after the BSF detained 70-year-old Bangladeshi farmer Abdul Mannan in the Ichakhali border area of Meherpur Sadar upazila, according to Bangladeshi media reports.

The incident came days after a 35-year-old tea farmer from West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district was allegedly abducted by a group of Bangladeshi men from a tea garden near the India-Bangladesh border. According to reports, tensions escalated after Mannan’s detention, with local residents allegedly taking the two Indian farmers in an apparent bid to pressure authorities for his release. The situation was subsequently addressed through a flag meeting between officials of the BSF and Bangladesh’s Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). Following the meeting, the three farmers were reportedly handed over to the authorities of their respective countries. Bangladeshi media reports said the two Indian farmers were returned to the BSF, while Mannan was also sent back to Bangladesh. The latest incident comes amid renewed strains in India-Bangladesh relations. India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi met Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday in Dhaka.

The meeting lasted around 30 minutes and was described by the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi as a courtesy call aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and engagement between the two neighbouring countries. The meeting was Trivedi’s first courtesy call on Rahman since he took charge as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh more than six weeks ago. Trivedi, a senior leader of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, is the first politician to hold the diplomatic post. The meeting also came amid speculation over whether Rahman would attend the upcoming BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12-13, after India invited him to the event. The diplomatic engagement comes at a sensitive time, with tensions between the two countries heightened following former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s recent virtual media interaction from New Delhi. Trivedi later met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday.
