An India Today special report details a serious aviation safety incident involving Air India flight AI 2379 from Phuket to Delhi, where an aircraft experienced a sudden 300-foot midair drop, causing passenger injuries and chaos. Official sources confirm the pilot in command tested positive for marijuana in a confirmatory drug test. Following the revelation, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu, the Civil Aviation Secretary, the AAIB, and the DGCA convened an emergency meeting with Air India's leadership at Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan.
A passenger aboard the flight recounted seeing the pilot before boarding looking disheveled with red eyes, and stated the pilot later exited the cockpit post-turbulence asking passengers not to record videos. Aviation specialist Squadron Leader Debolina Das raised questions regarding whether clear air turbulence contributed to the drop and how the drug was detected, while emphasizing that marijuana can remain traceable in blood for up to 90 days.
