Chairman of the Irrigation Advisory Committee and Koppal district in-charge Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi on Tuesday announced that water from the Tungabhadra reservoir was being released
Chairman of the Irrigation Advisory Committee and Koppal district in-charge Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi on Tuesday announced that water from the Tungabhadra reservoir was being released with immediate effect into various canals at the rate of 4,100 cusecs for 90 days, based on the water availability in the reservoir. Speaking to reporters after the 126th meeting of the Tungabhadra project and Vijayanagara Canals Irrigation Advisory Committee, held at the TBP auditorium in Munirabad on Tuesday, Mr. Tangadagi said the reservoir currently had 82 tmcft of water and was expected to receive another 16 tmcft in the coming days.
The next meeting of the Irrigation Advisory Committee would be held on September 11, he said. According to the schedule finalised at the meeting, 4,100 cusecs of water will be released into the Tungabhadra Left Bank Main Canal from August 11 to November 10. The Tungabhadra Right Bank High-Level Canal will receive 1,200 cusecs during the same period, while the Right Bank Low-Level Canal will receive 650 cusecs. The Rayabasavanna Canal will receive an average of 180 cusecs from January 1 to December 10.
The Tungabhadra Left Bank High-Level Canal will receive 25 cusecs from August 11 to November 10. In addition, 500 cusecs will be released into the river from August 11 to 17, Mr. Tangadagi said. The decision was taken after taking into account the water requirements of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, which have shares of 3 tmcft and 30 tmcft respectively, besides 2 tmcft earmarked as dead storage and the requirement for drinking water. The government also held discussions with elected representatives and farmers from the four districts concerned before finalising the release schedule, he said.
โWe hope for good rainfall and pray that the reservoir receives adequate inflows. Our government will always stand by farmers,โ Mr. Tangadagi said. Minister Nagendra, former Minister Boseraju, Karnataka Area Development Authority chairman Hasan Sab Dotihal and legislators from the region participated in the meeting.
