Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is facing a political dilemma in Jharkhand, where the BJP has seized on student protests to accuse the Leader of Opposition of “double standards” over police action against demonstrators. The BJP has contrasted Gandhi’s high-profile intervention during student protests in Delhi, including the July 21 agitation outside the Prime Minister’s residence, with what it calls a far more restrained response to the protests in Ranchi, where the Congress is part of the ruling coalition. Read Full Story The Congress has pushed back, maintaining that Gandhi has repeatedly supported the protesting students, condemned the reported police action and asked the state leadership to engage with them. The political difficulty for Gandhi, however, stems from the fact that the Jharkhand government is headed by JMM leader Hemant Soren and includes the Congress as a coalition partner. BJP ACCUSES RAHUL OF ‘DOUBLE STANDARDS’ BJP leaders have sought to make the contrast between Delhi and Ranchi the centre of their attack. BJP MP Anurag Thakur questioned whether Gandhi had asked the Jharkhand government to use force against protesting youth, while Rajya Sabha MP JP Nadda accused him of remaining a “mute spectator” to the Ranchi agitation.

The BJP’s argument is that Gandhi was willing to directly confront the Centre over police action against students in Delhi but has not taken a similarly visible stand against a state government in which Congress shares power. The party has sought to portray the difference as “politics of convenience." CONGRESS SAYS RAHUL BACKED STUDENTS Congress has rejected that charge. Party leaders said Gandhi condemned the reported lathi-charge on students, spoke to their representatives and directed the Jharkhand Congress leadership to engage with them and work towards breaking the deadlock. Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has also defended him, saying Gandhi remained in touch with the protesting students. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said Gandhi had condemned the police action on the same evening and accused the BJP of drawing a selective comparison between the Ranchi protests and the earlier agitation in Delhi. The Congress has also argued that the circumstances of the two protests were different. A party MP told India Today that demonstrators at Jantar Mantar had faced measures including pellet guns and spikes, while the Jharkhand government had been engaging with protesting aspirants from the beginning.

Party-affiliated organisations, including the NSUI and Seva Dal, have also extended support to the agitation. CHIDAMBARAM CRITICISES JHARKHAND POLICE Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has taken a more direct line, criticising the Jharkhand Police and what he described as their “political masters”. Chidambaram said students had the right to protest peacefully and that the confrontation should be resolved through dialogue rather than force. His intervention has allowed the Congress to argue that the party has not remained silent on the police action, even if Gandhi himself has not taken the same public route that he did during the Delhi protests. Around 18 people have reportedly been arrested following the confrontation, while action has also been taken against officials accused of wrongdoing. WHY JHARKHAND PUTS RAHUL IN A BIND The controversy underscores the political balancing act facing Gandhi. In Delhi, the Congress was opposing a BJP-led government and could directly align itself with protesters. In Jharkhand, any sustained attack on the state administration would also mean confronting a government in which Congress is a coalition partner.
