U.S. biotech major Amgen plans to open a Science and Innovation Centre in Genome Valley, Hyderabad, a decision set to help Telangana strengthen its position

U.S. biotech major Amgen plans to open a Science and Innovation Centre in Genome Valley, Hyderabad, a decision set to help Telangana strengthen its position as a global life sciences hub. Expected to be operational in 2027, the facility will bring together scientists and technologists across discovery chemistry, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics as well as precision medicine. The team will work closely with Amgen’s research sites globally, the firm said on Tuesday after signing an MoU with Telangana government in the presence of IT and Industries Minister D.Sridhar Babu. Amgen’s global research and development network consists of seven research laboratories.

Executive vice-president of R&D, Artificial Intelligence and Data at Amgen Jay Bradner said the new centre would contribute to integration of experimental science, data and technology across Amgen global research capabilities and complement the firm’s strong U.S.-based research and development footprint.” The Minister’s office said the proposed research and innovation centre will be creating employment opportunities for around 200 highly skilled professionals. It will add further momentum to Hyderabad’s emergence as a global hub for advanced life sciences research. “The continued expansion of global pharmaceutical and biotechnology leaders in Telangana is a matter of great pride. It reflects growing confidence of global companies in our State’s talent, infrastructure and innovation ecosystem,” the Minister said.

Amgen had in February 2025 opened its global capability centre (GCC) in Hyderabad. Telangana is emerging as a preferred destination for global life sciences companies on the back of its strong research capabilities, skilled workforce, world-class infrastructure and the established ecosystem at Genome Valley. “Our ambition is to make Hyderabad a place where the next generation of medicines and therapies can be discovered, developed and taken to the world,” Mr.Sridhar Babu said, while urging Amgen to prioritise local youth and talent from Telangana in hiring for the proposed centre. Amgen India managing director Naveen Gullapalli said Genome Valley offers strong scientific expertise and infrastructure and the new facility will complement Amgen’s existing technology and innovation site in Hyderabad.

Together, the sites will enable closer integration of wet-laboratory science with innovative technology, advancing how the company develops medicines. “Hyderabad’s strong life sciences ecosystem and deep STEM expertise enable us to apply advanced technologies at scale. Our new centre at Genome Valley will help integrate biotechnology and digital innovation to serve more patients globally,” he said in a release.
