Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Tuesday directed officials to ensure that law and order is maintained in Mandya district in view of the Cauvery water issue and to prevent any untoward incident. During a video conference with government officials and employees from all districts, Mr. Shivakumar told Mandya Deputy Commissioner Kumar and Superintendent of Police Shobha Rani that the decision on how much water should be released to Tamil Nadu was the responsibility of the State government, while maintaining law and order in Mandya was the responsibility of the district administration and police.
He said it was not possible to retain water indefinitely and that it would flow out if the Kabini reservoir reached full capacity. Farmers would have to plan their crops based on water availability and storage levels in reservoirs, he said, asking officials to create awareness among farmers about the availability of water. “We are in a difficult situation now. There is climate variability across the world, and hence we cannot expect rainfall to follow the usual pattern.
It may rain or it may not,” he said. On SIR Shivakumar also directed officials to work carefully on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and ensure that genuine voters were not deprived of their constitutional right to vote. “All officials should work carefully on the SIR. Genuine voters should not lose their constitutional right to vote for any reason. It is your duty to help them retain their right,” he said. He instructed officials to focus on establishing Bharat Jodo Sanghas at the zilla panchayat level and to prepare and distribute pamphlets to raise awareness among people.
He also directed officials to take necessary precautionary measures to ensure that there was no shortage of drinking water in the district. Shivakumar also addressed officials from Mysuru district, who attended the video conference at the zilla panchayat hall in Mysuru.
