Normal life across Jharkhand was disrupted as a statewide shutdown was called in response to police action against students protesting alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations. The agitation, which has entered its eighteenth day, escalated after student protesters breached assembly barricades, leading to police using lathi charge, tear gas shelling, and water cannons. Hundreds of student wing workers were detained during a march toward the assembly as clashes with security forces continued.
The incident has triggered a major political confrontation, causing friction between ruling alliance partners over the heavy-handed response by the police. While Opposition leaders condemned the action against peacefully protesting students, political leaders from the ruling coalition attempted to justify the measures or avoid questions on the matter. Protesters blocked roads, burned tires, and shut down markets across Ranchi, maintaining that the agitation will continue until their demands regarding recruitment and scholarships are addressed.
