Watch: FSSAI Proposes Strict Fat, Sugar & Salt Limits To Ban Junk Food Sales In School Canteens
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a draft notification introducing strict numeric definitions for junk food based on fat, sugar
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a draft notification introducing strict numeric definitions for junk food based on fat, sugar, and salt content. Under the proposed guidelines, solid foods containing over 4.2 grams of added fat, 3 grams of sugar, or 0.625 grams of salt per 100 grams will be classified as junk food. For liquids, the limits are set at 1.5 grams of fat, 2 grams of sugar, and 0.175 grams of salt per 100 milliliters.
Items exceeding these thresholds, including deep-fried snacks, packaged chips, sweetened biscuits, and flavored milk, will be banned from sale in school canteens and cannot be on school campuses. The limits align with dietary guidelines from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). FSSAI has opened a 60-day window for public and stakeholder feedback. The report emphasizes that effective enforcement and active participation from parents will be crucial to ensure these regulations are successfully implemented on the ground.
