A group of schoolchildren in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur took their protest from the classroom to the district administration office on Tuesday, demanding a proper paved road to their school. Carrying the Tricolour and raising slogans, the students marched to the Hamirpur District Magistrate’s office along with their parents and staged a protest over the poor condition of the road connecting their villages to the school. The unusual protest caught the administration off guard, with a large number of children arriving at the Collectorate and demanding immediate action to fix the road.

They alleged that the road leading to their school has remained in poor condition and becomes virtually unusable during the monsoon. According to the students and their parents, the area has a population of around 3,000 people and is dependent on an unpaved road. During heavy rain, the route turns into a muddy stretch, making it difficult for students to reach school and for residents to take sick people to hospitals. The students also claimed that an alternative route earlier used by residents had been closed by the Forest Department, leaving them with limited access to the area. The protest was not the students’ first attempt to draw attention to the problem. They said they had staged a protest on July 3, following which soil was dumped on the road as a temporary measure.
However, with the arrival of rain, the road once again turned into mud. Frustrated by the lack of a permanent solution, the students decided to approach the District Magistrate’s office directly. As the children arrived at the Collectorate in a procession, carrying the Tricolour and banners, local officials and police personnel reached the spot to prevent the situation from escalating. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Abhishek Kumar and Circle Officer Yashpal Singh reportedly reached the location with police personnel and attempted to stop the students from proceeding towards the DM’s office. However, the students continued towards the office. Police and other administrative staff eventually stopped the group, following which the students sat down in protest at the Collectorate gate. The demonstration continued for some time as the students raised slogans and pressed their demand for a permanent road. The students have demanded construction of a paved road connecting their villages and school. They have warned that they will continue their protest until a permanent solution is provided. The incident has once again highlighted the challenges faced by residents of rural areas during the monsoon, when poorly maintained and unpaved roads can severely affect access to schools, healthcare and other essential services.
