The Cauvery Panel has ordered the Karnataka government to release 12,000 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu for the next 15 days, increasing the quantum from an earlier order of 3,500 cusecs. The directive poses a setback for the Karnataka government led by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, which maintains that releasing additional water will harm the state's domestic interests, including drinking water supplies and local farmers.
Karnataka plans to appeal the decision before the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and may approach the Supreme Court, where Tamil Nadu has already filed a petition. The long-standing Cauvery water sharing dispute remains a critical issue for both southern states.
