Representational image/ANI In a revenge plot reminiscent of a crime thriller, Jammu and Kashmir Police uncovered a scheme by a man to frame his e girlfriend’s husband on drug trafficking charges. The conspiracy involved a cross-border parcel, a fake tip-off, and narcotics shipped from over 1,300 kilometres away.

The Intercepted Parcel The incident came to light in Ganderbal district when law enforcement officers intercepted a suspicious parcel at a local post office following an anonymous tip-off. Opened in the presence of a magistrate, the package—shipped from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh—was found to contain four kilograms of cocaine, 80 grams of cannabis, and a stash of psychotropic substances. Police initially targeted the intended recipient, a local poultry farmer who had married just months earlier. However, the farmer maintained his innocence, explaining that he was expecting a legitimate sample of poultry feed negotiated via WhatsApp. The Saudi Phone Call Connection During preliminary questioning, the farmer disclosed a vital clue: earlier in the year, he had received an ominous phone call from an international Saudi Arabian number warning him to abandon his marriage plans. Shifting focus to the farmer’s wife, investigators identified her former boyfriend, Tariq Ahmad Sofi, a resident of the Zainakote area in Srinagar.

Further probing revealed that Sofi had engineered the entire setup out of spite over the marriage. How the Setup Was Executed According to investigators, Sofi enlisted the help of his friend Areeb, a Kanpur native residing in Saudi Arabia. Areeb dispatched the narcotics-laden package directly to the farmer’s address under the guise of poultry samples. Once the consignment was dispatched, Sofi arranged for an indirect tip-off to reach local authorities. His goal was to trigger a harsh law-enforcement response—potentially subjecting the innocent groom to severe charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Police Action and Ongoing Probe Sofi was arrested on August 9 and booked under relevant sections of the NDPS Act. Police are currently evaluating Areeb’s role to determine whether he was fully aware of the framing plot or merely facilitated the shipment.
