According to maritime security, the vessel, identified as the Panama-flagged Vela Nova, may have come under a missile attack while passing through the Gulf of Oman, around 71 nautical miles off Pakistan’s coast.
British maritime risk management group Vanguard also reported that the ship was believed to have been struck during its passage through the region, Reuters reported. The Gulf of Oman lies off Pakistan’s southwestern coast and connects the Arabian Sea with the Strait of Hormuz. The strategically important waterway is located near major Pakistani ports, including Gwadar. The UKMTO said it received a report at 0715 UTC on August 11, 2026, about an incident involving a container ship and military forces in the Gulf of Oman. The agency did not disclose the vessel’s identity, flag or details about the military force involved, nor did it provide information on what triggered the incident. It said authorities are aware of the situation and an investigation is underway, while urging vessels operating in the area to remain vigilant amid the evolving security environment.
