(Photo: AFP file) A Baloch separatist leader on Monday called on the international community to recognise what he described as the “Republic of Balochistan" as an independent country, as supporters marked August 11 as Balochistan’s Independence Day. In a message shared on X, Baloch leader Mir Yar Baloch claimed that Balochistan was an independent nation and urged countries and international organisations to stop referring to the region as a province of Pakistan. “Moral support for the people of Balochistan must continue so that we can remove the cancer-like Pakistan from our land, Balochistan," it said. The claims are not recognised by Pakistan or the international community.

Balochistan is internationally recognised as a province of Pakistan. However, last month the rebel group seized control of the majority of the region and declared independence. The message called for continued international “moral support" for the people of Balochistan and urged countries to recognise what it described as the region’s independence. “The Republic of Balochistan demands from the entire world that from this day onwards, instead of calling, writing or referring to Balochistan as a province of Pakistan, it should be written, read and called an independent country," the message said. The group also claimed that Balochistan would assume responsibility for foreign policy, defence, economic affairs, politics and diplomacy. It said preparations were underway for the eventual introduction of passports, a currency, media organisations, trade and commerce institutions and diplomatic missions. The statement further claimed that efforts were underway to unite different strands of Baloch political leadership.
