The opposition parties in Parliament remain divided over the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) Bill. While the Congress and the Trinamool Congress have demanded the complete withdrawal of the proposed legislation, other opposition parties including the DMK, NCP, Samajwadi Party, and BJD have sought sending the bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for further scrutiny. Introduced in Parliament, the bill aims to regulate foreign contributions to non-governmental organizations and public entities to ensure national security and enhance financial transparency.
Concerns have been raised by various civil society groups, non-governmental organizations, and religious bodies regarding its potential impact on donations. Despite objections and ongoing discussions with various stakeholders, the government maintains that regulating foreign funding is a sovereign function driven by national security concerns and clarifies that it has no intention of withdrawing the FCRA Bill from Parliament.
