(AFP photo) A day after the alleged police action against protesting students in Jharkhand, workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) burned tyres and blocked roads across places in Ranchi, the State capital, where the demonstration over irregularities in JPSC-JSSC examinations is being held. The BJP has enforced a statewide ‘bandh‘, seeking an answer from the Hemant Soren-led government over the police action against protesting students during their march to the state Assembly on Monday, August 10.

According to India Today, citing police, BJP workers blocked roads near the CMPDI gate on Kanke Road, while tyres were set ablaze near Nucleus Mall, Harmu Chowk, and Kishorganj Chowk. The bandh severely disrupted traffic, throwing normal life out of gear. The outrage intensified, with chaotic scenes unfolding after police detained Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) workers during their planned march from the old Assembly building to the new premises. Sitting on the ground, the protestors raised slogans as the police attempted to stuff them into vans. In Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district, hundreds of BJP workers gathered on the Ranchi-Patna Highway on Tuesday morning, sat on the road and raised slogans against the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) government. BJP’s Call For ‘Jharkhand Bandh’ The BJP’s call for a statewide ‘bandh‘ came a day after the police used batons, water canons, and tear gas shells to disperse job-aspirants who marched towards the State Assembly to push for their demands.

BJP’s state president Aditya Sahu condemned the actions, describing them as “atrocities" against students. He also accused the Hemant Soren-led government of using force instead of addressing their complaints. Student Leader Admitted To Hospital Amidst the chaos, Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) leader Devendra Nath Mahto –– who has been staging an indefinite hunger strike –– was admitted to a hospital in Ranchi after his health condition deteriorated after participating in the march. Aspirants of the JPSC-JSSC have been protesting with key demands that include: 1. a CBI probe into the said irregularities 2. the cancellation of tainted recruitment exams like the 14th JPSC preliminary test and 3. systemic reforms for total transparency. Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) –– which led a similar agitation at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy –– has affirmed its support to those protesting in Jharkhand. Condemning the alleged brutality against students, CJP’s founder Abhijeet Dipke spoke to Mahato over the phone and described the police action as “unacceptable".
