A historic moment is set for India’s 80th Independence Day celebrations as Vande Mataram will be sung from the ramparts of the Red Fort for the first time on August 15, 2026. The announcement has added a major new element to the traditional Independence Day ceremony led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The national song will be performed as India marks 150 years of Vande Mataram, which played a significant role in the country’s freedom struggle.
The 2026 Independence Day celebrations will also focus on “Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047”, highlighting the contribution of young Indians to the country’s development. The Defence Ministry has described the inclusion of Vande Mataram at the Red Fort as a historic first. More than 27,000 people are expected to attend the ceremony, with the song forming part of the formal proceedings. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unfurl the national flag from the Red Fort and address the nation as part of the Independence Day celebrations.
