The migration has already begun in phases, with the revamped IRCTC website forming part of the transition. The upgrade comes at a time when the overwhelming majority of reserved railway tickets are booked online. Between June 2025 and June 2026, 65.08 crore reserved tickets were booked through the PRS, of which 57.90 crore, or nearly 89 per cent, were booked online, according to data cited by The Indian Express. What Is PRS And Why Is Railways Changing It? The Passenger Reservation System is the computerised backbone that manages reserved train ticketing. It handles functions such as ticket booking, cancellation, seat allocation, waitlists, RAC status, reservation charts and passenger enquiries. Introduced in 1986, the system gradually expanded into a nationwide network and eventually became the backbone for online reservations as well. Internet-based ticketing was introduced in 2002, while subsequent upgrades helped Indian Railways cope with the rapid shift towards digital booking.
But the scale of demand has changed dramatically. The existing system can handle around 32,000 ticket bookings per minute. The upgraded PRS is designed to process more than 1.5 lakh bookings per minute, almost five times the existing capacity. Its enquiry-handling capacity is also expected to jump from around 4 lakh enquiries per minute to more than 40 lakh. This covers searches and enquiries related to matters such as PNR status, seat availability, waitlist position and RAC updates. What Will Change For IRCTC Users? The changes will not necessarily mean that passengers have to learn an entirely new ticket-booking process. Instead, the aim is to make the existing process faster, cleaner and capable of handling heavy traffic. The new IRCTC beta website, which went live in July, has already introduced four major changes. The new PRS is being designed to cope with sharp spikes in simultaneous traffic rather than simply increasing capacity during normal booking hours.
