The devotees of Lord Shiva undertake an annual Hindu pilgrimage, the Kanwar Yatra. During the month of Sawan, devotees (Kanwariyas) bring Ganga water from holy places like Haridwar, Gangotri, or Gaumukh and perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva at their local temples.

According to a report by the Hindustan Times, a sound metre installed in Ramesh Nagar –– a West Delhi area –– revealed that the levels of exposure were high enough to cause long-term hearing damage. Residents said the influx of devotees, coupled with two camps set up beneath the Ramesh Nagar Metro station, had made daily life a struggle. Residents added that their sleep had been disrupted, with daily routines thrown into disarray. They also alleged that heaps of garbage had piled up near the Kanwariya camps, raising concerns about unhygienic conditions and the spread of diseases. The residents revealed that music from boomboxes continued late into the night, prompting vibration into the walls of the nearby houses. ‘We Dread These Days’ Gurbir Singh, a stockbroker who resides opposite a camp, opened up on daily struggles he and his family had been facing. “We dread these days.

I was born and brought up here. Now I curse my family for buying a house on the main road because this camp is set up here every year. I can’t sleep or work peacefully. The boombox is blaring all the time," he said, according to the Hindustan Times. Shekhar Bhatia, an MNC employee, revealed how his work was heavily affected due to the persistent disturbances. “Office calls are affected and at night also old people are unable to sleep because of the loud noise full night". Traffic To Be Affected With Sawan Shivratri falling on Tuesday, August 11, traffic across Delhi and the adjoining Capital Region (NCR) will remain affected as the Kanwar Yatra enters its peak phase. According to an advisory issued by the Delhi Police, roads from Delhi to Noida, Noida to Ghaziabad, Ghaziabad to Delhi and Delhi to Faridabad will remain affected the most.
