Among the most significant appointments, Major General Ahmad Vahidi has been named commander-in-chief of the IRGC, Iran’s most powerful military and security organisation.
Vahidi is a veteran of the Revolutionary Guards and has previously commanded the Quds Force, the IRGC’s overseas operations arm. His elevation is particularly significant because of his growing influence over Iran’s wartime security and strategic decision-making. Major General Ali Abdollahi has been appointed chief of staff of Iran’s Armed Forces. Abdollahi previously headed the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, the command structure responsible for coordinating operations between Iran’s military branches, including the IRGC and the regular army. The appointments also include changes at the operational level. Rear Admiral Ali Azmaei has been named commander of the IRGC Navy, while Hossein Taeb, a powerful intelligence and security figure with longstanding ties to the Revolutionary Guards, has been appointed head of the Basij Organisation. Kioumars Heidari and Mostafa Izadi have also been given senior deputy positions within the military and IRGC command hierarchy.
The reshuffle is more than a routine change of personnel. It signals an effort by the new supreme leadership to consolidate command and place experienced hardline commanders in positions that could become crucial during any future escalation. The IRGC has already emerged as an increasingly influential force in Iran’s strategic decision-making. Earlier this year, assessments indicated that Vahidi and commanders around him had gained substantial influence over Iran’s military response and even its approach to negotiations, particularly during tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. The elevation of Abdollahi is equally important because the Khatam al-Anbiya command sits at the intersection of Iran’s regular military and IRGC structures. His new position could therefore help streamline coordination between the two establishments during wartime.
