(Getty Images via AFP) The US State Department has revoked more than 175,000 visas issued to foreign nationals under President Donald Trump’s administration, as Washington steps up its immigration crackdown. The department said on Monday that the visa cancellations targeted people who had violated visa conditions, committed crimes, called for violence against US citizens, defrauded Americans, abused the immigration system or posed national security risks.
Crimes Among Main Reasons Most of the visa revocations followed encounters with law enforcement, the US State Department said. Assault, driving under the influence, theft and drug-related offences were among the leading reasons, Reuters reported. The department cited several cases, including a person charged with rape and sexual battery, another facing charges of kidnapping and human trafficking, and an individual accused of possessing child sexual abuse material. More than 100 visas were also revoked by a US embassy in North Africa from so-called “birth tourists". The department said the individuals had allegedly travelled to the US mainly to give birth so their children could obtain US citizenship. The State Department also said visas had been revoked from several foreigners who celebrated the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Wider Immigration Crackdown The latest figure marks a sharp rise from January, when the department said it had revoked more than 100,000 visas, then described as a record. The move is part of a broader immigration crackdown since Trump returned to the White House last year. The administration has also tightened visa screening, including expanded checks of applicants’ social media activity. Rights advocates and human rights experts have criticised the increased screening, arguing that it could threaten free speech and lead to greater surveillance and targeting of immigrants.
