At least 111 people have been killed after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia, with buildings collapsing and people trapped beneath the rubble. The epicentre was near San Jose del Palmar in the Choco region, about 400 kilometres west of the capital, Bogota.
The powerful earthquake shook towns and cities across western Colombia and was also felt in neighbouring Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela. Cali, one of Colombia’s largest cities, has been among the worst affected, with parts of the city declared disaster zones.
Rescue teams and volunteers are searching collapsed buildings for survivors, while residents report power, water, internet and traffic disruptions. The Colombian president has declared an emergency and set up a unified command post to coordinate the response. Geologists say it was the strongest earthquake to hit Colombia in the past decade.
