(AFP photo) Police in Jharkhand will examine CCTV footage from Monday’s protest march to identify “miscreants" who allegedly disrupted the students’ agitation over irregularities in recruitment examinations, officials said. The move came after the march towards the Jharkhand Assembly turned violent, with police using water cannons, tear gas and lathis to stop protesters who breached multiple barricades.

Ranchi SSP Rakesh Ranjan said police would examine the footage to identify “anti-social elements who disrupted the peaceful students’ protest". Ranjan said 14 policemen were injured during the stir on Monday, and the police had to resort to “mild lathi-charge" to control the agitators. Monday’s clashes began after protesters breached several barricades near the Assembly. BJP Calls Statewide Bandh The BJP has called a statewide bandh on Tuesday, August 11, from 8am to midnight to protest what it described as “police atrocities" against students. BJP state president Aditya Sahu alleged that hundreds of protesters were injured during Monday’s action and accused the JMM-led government of treating students “like criminals". “The police fired tear gas shells, used water cannons and batons. Even in the evening, batons were rained down on the protestors. Hundreds of students were injured.

He said essential services would remain outside the bandh’s scope and demanded an end to what he called “barbaric action" against the students. Soren Urges Dialogue The agitation entered its 17th day on Monday. Students are protesting alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations and demanding greater transparency and fair opportunities. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren accused opposition leaders of trying to use the protests for political gain and urged students not to be misled. “I understand that amidst your peaceful movement, some people from the opposition tried to spoil the atmosphere and mislead students for political gains. I appeal to all of you not to fall into the trap of any such political narrative," Soren said in a post on X. He said students had the right to raise their concerns peacefully and assured them that the government would examine their demands “with utmost seriousness and sensitivity".
