In an interview about urban infrastructure and green cover in Mumbai, architect and urban planner Samarth Das discussed the growing threat to public gardens, playgrounds, and open spaces due to rapid construction. Highlighting the ongoing citizen struggles to protect natural assets, Samarth Das noted, "the build more syndrome has really gripped the city." He emphasized that intense real estate pressure is causing land subsidence and worsening the density balance across Mumbai.
Das asserted that the state must not absolve itself of its duties and responsibilities towards safeguarding public open spaces and public lands, criticizing the reliance on private partners through public-private partnership models. Fellow urban planner Pranav pointed out that large car-centric projects, such as the coastal road, benefit only a small fraction of the population rather than addressing core civic needs like public housing, schools, and bus connectivity.
Both experts called for a sustainable master plan focused on building with nature to prevent the decline in Mumbaikars' quality of life.
