Architect Nitin Kilawala, a signatory to the letter sent by the Mumbai's Architect Collective to the Maharashtra Chief Minister and BMC Commissioner, raised concerns over the rapid loss of open spaces in Mumbai. Speaking on the issue, Kilawala criticized government policies that allow excessive development at the expense of public grounds, stating, "By reducing these open spaces, government is actually selling our fundamental right of natural light and natural ventilation." He argued that land optimization through continuous construction is suffocating the city and creating non-functional urban spaces.
Kilawala condemned car-centric projects, such as proposed underground car parks in public parks, calling them regressive and highlighting that existing multi-story parking lots remain underutilized or misused. He also pointed out the misuse of Floor Space Index (FSI) regulations, the neglect of BEST bus depots, and the unchecked removal of trees by authorities. Kilawala emphasized the need for genuine public consultation in infrastructure planning and sustainable urban development.
