In an India Today special broadcast anchored by Gaurav, West Asia expert Dr. Wael Awad and former Pakistani army officer Major Adil Raja discussed Pakistan's involvement in the tripartite Makkah defense agreement with Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Major Adil Raja stated that Pakistan is a cash-strapped economy looking for monetary input and that 'Pakistan has been playing the role of mercenaries in Saudi Arab.' He noted that Pakistani air defense is already intercepting Yemeni drone strikes and highlighted potential internal security risks, including a growing Shia-Sunni sectarian divide within the Pakistani military command.
Wael Awad explained that the agreement aims to change the balance of regional powers following the security vacuum left by the United States, positioning Turkey and Pakistan to contain the situation against Iran and Houthi forces. Both panelists emphasized that while Pakistani troops have supported Saudi defense for decades, severe internal economic and security challenges in Pakistan significantly complicate its overseas military commitments.
