The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) alliance is with the people of Punjab, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said on Monday (August 10, 2026), adding that a meeting with the Prime Minister did not have to be seen “through a political lens”. Saini was replying to a question on the possibility of the BJP forming an alliance again with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in the upcoming 2027 Punjab Assembly election, following a meeting last week between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal in New Delhi. “The people of Punjab have now understood that the State’s development and the welfare of its people are possible only through a ‘double engine government’.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the voice of the hearts of 140 crore countrymen. If anyone wishes to meet the Prime Minister, they are free to do so. There is no need to view anyone meeting with the Prime Minister through a political lens,” the Haryana CM said at a press conference here. Even as leaders from both parties remain tight-lipped about the deliberations, speculation is rife that the former alliance partners could join hands again. The BJP and the SAD were alliance partners from the late 1990, making the latter one of the BJP’s oldest alliance partners. However, the SAD decided to breakaway from the NDA in 2020 following the controversy over the Centre’s farm laws, which were later repealed.
Hitting out at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Mr. Saini said that instead of fulfilling the promises made to the people of Punjab, Mr. Mann seemed to be “busy worrying about Haryana”. “The Punjab Chief Minister should first account for the promises made to the people of his own State and tell them how many of those commitments have actually been fulfilled. The AAP had made a series of tall promises to the people of Punjab before coming to power, but the people of the State today feel let down. With the Assembly election only a few months away, the same people are once again being subjected to fresh promises and announcements by the AAP [which are] aimed at misleading them,” the Haryana CM alleged.
The people of Punjab had first suffered exploitation under the Congress, and the AAP was now taking that exploitation further, he said. “The people of Punjab are well aware of the ground reality and will not be misled by political rhetoric and last-minute announcements,” Mr. Saini said.
