The Akali Dal Waris Punjab De (ADWPD) on Sunday announced its first candidate for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, fielding Satwant Singh, son of Kehar Singh, who was executed for his role in the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, from the Bassi Pathana Assembly constituency. The announcement was made by Tarsem Singh, father of jailed MP Amritpal Singh. The announcement has also drawn attention within Panthic political circles, as Amrit Kaur Maloa, sister of Faridkot MP Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, had earlier announced her intention to contest the 2027 Assembly election from the Bassi Pathana constituency.
Read Full Story Announcing Satwant Singh's candidature, Tarsem Singh said the decision reflected Akali Dal Waris Punjab De's commitment to honouring families that had made sacrifices for the Panth and Punjab. He said the party's politics was rooted in Panthic principles, Punjab's rights and ensuring representation for families associated with such sacrifices, rather than being driven solely by electoral considerations. Akali Dal Waris Punjab De said its politics goes beyond electoral considerations and is centred on Panthic principles, Punjab's rights, and the honour and dignity of families that have made sacrifices for the Sikh community.
Tarsem Singh also dismissed suggestions that such families were being sidelined, saying the candidature highlighted the party's commitment to giving them due representation. He further cited the appointment of Sukhwinder Singh Agwan, a member of a Shaheed family, to the party's Parliamentary Board as another example of the organisational responsibilities being entrusted to members of these families. Notably, Sarabjit Singh Khalsa was present at the Amritsar Press Club during the announcement of Satwant Singh's candidature. He shared the stage with Akali Dal Waris Punjab De's acting president Bapu Tarsem Singh, father of Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh.
Several senior party leaders and Panthic figures, including Palwinder Singh, Mahavir Singh, Jaskaran Singh Riyad, Amandeep Daduana and Sukhbir Singh Cheema, were also present during the announcement, along with other leaders and supporters. The developments have brought Bassi Pathana into early political focus ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, with multiple Panthic leaders staking a claim in the constituency.
