A Kerala court on Monday granted bail to right-wing commentator T G Mohandas in a case registered over his controversial remarks about a students’ protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar last month. Mohandas was arrested by the Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police on Sunday evening and produced before the Thiruvananthapuram Additional Chief Judicial First Class Magistrate Court for remand proceedings. The case relates to a video uploaded on Mohandas’ YouTube channel, ‘Pathrika’, in which he allegedly made remarks about the students participating in the Jantar Mantar protest. The video, which subsequently went viral, allegedly showed Mohandas saying that the protest could result in “incidents of gang rape." He further claimed that there would be no complaints because those attending the protest “like rape" and that there were girls who “enjoy being raped". Thiruvananthapuram, Keralam: RSS supporter T.G. Police registered the case following a complaint alleging that the videos published on Mohandas’ YouTube channel were aimed at disturbing public peace and creating fear and unrest among people.
He was subsequently booked under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Information Technology Act and Kerala Police Act. Mohandas was picked up from his residence at Koovappadam near Mattancherry by a team from the Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police Station. Police Seek Custody During Bail Hearing During the court proceedings, the Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police said additional charges had also been invoked in the case. These included provisions relating to words, sounds, gestures or objects intended to insult the modesty of a woman, as well as criminal intimidation involving severe threats. The prosecution opposed bail and sought custody of Mohandas for further investigation. Police also expressed concern that, being an influential person, he could potentially influence witnesses or tamper with evidence if released. Defence Cites Age And Health Mohandas’ defence argued against continued custody, citing his age and health condition. His lawyers also submitted that the offences invoked against him were bailable.
