The incident took place around midnight on Sunday at an aided tribal residential school in Japtalai village, located around 10 km from the Dhanora taluka headquarters.
According to district officials, the girls were sleeping on the hostel floor when they were bitten by the snake. The victims who died were aged 8, 12 and 14. Three more girls, aged between 11 and 14, sustained snakebite injuries and were admitted for medical treatment, PTI reported, citing an official. The incident has prompted the Gadchiroli district administration to order an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the deaths and examine the safety arrangements at the residential school. Probe Ordered Into Snakebite Incident Gadchiroli District Collector Avishyant Panda has ordered a detailed probe into the deaths to determine how the snakebite incident occurred and whether adequate safety measures were in place at the hostel. Panda said officials will inspect the school’s accommodation and assess whether the management had followed prescribed safety norms and precautions.
Teams from the Tribal Development Department will visit the site and collect relevant information. Three students who survived the snakebite are receiving treatment and were administered anti-venom promptly, with medical teams monitoring their health, the collector said. He also directed the district surgeon to ensure uninterrupted treatment and provide the girls with special medical care. Panda said responsibility would be fixed if the inquiry establishes negligence or lapses in safety arrangements, with action taken against those found guilty under applicable rules. Gadchiroli co-guardian minister Ashish Jaiswal expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and directed officials to ensure that the injured students receive all necessary medical assistance. Jaiswal said further action would be decided after the Tribal Development Department submits its inquiry report.
